Itchan Kala by AC84 on Flickr.
Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of the old Khiva oasis, Uzbekistan, which was the last resting-place of caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. The old town retains more than 50 historic monuments and 250 old houses, dating primarily from the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. It is a coherent and well-preserved example of the Muslim architecture of Central Asia.
